They are most well known for the unrivalled machining capabilities which allows them to produce the very best race engines for their global customers.


This organisation employs circa 100 people at their UK site and has other sites situated in the US. 


Located in Northampton, our client is actively seeking a Quality Manager to join their business on a permanent basis with a view to sustain and improve their quality department. Quality is the linch-pin to every successful company when manufacturing safety critical components and with over 25 years experience, this business understands the importance of a strong quality department. The successful individual will have worked in a challenging, fast paced precision engineering environment with modern, up to date machining capabilities, specifically 5 axis machining.

Ilmor is a world renowned SME which employs circa 100 people with other sites located in the US. Following multi million-pounds worth of investment including a new 5 axis, multi pallet, 180 tool changer machine, they boast some of the most fascinating, high end machinery on the market in order to keep ahead of their competition and ensure they deliver the best possible parts / service to their customers. Regular investment is applied, even during these uncertain times as they look to come out of the back of this pandemic stronger than before. 

Due to the continued investment, they can offer full turnkey solutions from concept through to delivery.

Multiple CMM’s and a 3D scanner are amongst the various state of the art equipment invested within the quality department.


THE ROLE: As Quality Manager you will be tasked to lead, guide and support the existing quality team by adopting a hands on approach. The company has recently sailed through both their AS9100 Rev D and ISO audits with flying colours however, as they strive for further improvement and growth, they require the successful individual to challenge the current status quo and identify how can they improve, where can they improve?

You will have full support of senior stakeholders within the business and will use this to drive change and improvements.

The business supports world class industry leaders & OEM’s therefore working to the highest standards including ISO9001 and AS9100 Rev D.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop, improve and maintain the Quality Management System
  • Ensure all products are delivered in accordance with customer requirements - Aerospace, Motorsport, Defence
  • Champion problem solving and continuous improvement activities
  • Drive and improve quality performance using appropriate Lean & Quality improvement tools - 8D, 5Y, Ishikawa, PFMEA, PPAP, APQP, MSA, SPC, 5S, etc. and implement corrective actions
  • Manage the quality inspection function
  • Create / update skill matrix for quality personnel and clearly define roles and responsibilities
  • Use KPI’s to monitor performance, report / analyse data and identify trends and patterns 
  • Carry out internal and external audits in accordance to industry and customer standards


Successful applicants will be required to demonstrate:

  • Previous Quality Management background would be ideal (Quality Engineer, Senior Quality Engineer or Lead Quality Engineer will also be considered)
  • Sound understanding of working with complex machined components
  • Knowledge, experience or at minimum a familiarity of working with parts which have been manufactured through 5 axis machining process
  • Previous man management / supervisory experience 
  • Experience of precision engineering / manufacturing environments where parts are manufactured for high end industry markets including: Aerospace, Motorsport, F1, Defence, Oil & Gas, Nuclear etc.
  • Adhered to AS9100 Rev D standards is desirable 
  • Ability to lead and develop / train others
  • Proven track record of achieving quality related targets - reduce scrap / waste, reduce non conformances, improve efficiencies etc.
  • Previously worked to KPI’s 
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing - SQDC


Essential criteria:

  1. 5 years minimum held within a Quality Engineering or Management position
  2. Sound knowledge of machining processes including 5 axis
  3. Adopt a hands on approach
  4. Willingness to challenge the current processes and procedures and identify improvements
  5. Hands on Quality Inspection AND/OR CMM experience
